Professor
Gursewak Singh umpired at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Born
15th October 1923 in Patiala.
He
umpired at the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games.
Gursewak
had a brilliant career as a sportsman, administrator and an
academician.
He
played hockey for over 15 years during which he represented
school, college and State teams.
He
was a member of the Executive Committees of the Patiala State
and then PEPSU Hockey Association from 1946 to 1952. He worked
as treasurer for one year and from 1954 was the Honorary Secretary
of this Association. He had been a member of the Council of
the Indian Hockey Federation since 1954; member of the I.H.F.
Technical Committee from 1954 to 1958; member of the I.H.F.
Selection Committee from 1956 to 1958; member of the Executive
Board of the I.H.F. from 1959 to 1962 and then its Honorary
Treasurer. He was Secretary General of I.H.F. from 1990 to 1994,
Vice President of I.H.F. and a Member of Indian Olympic Association.
Gursewak
was manager of the Indian team to the third Asian Games in Tokyo
in 1958; was member of the Pepsu Olympic Association Council
and Executive Committee up to 1957.He was associated with the
Punjab Olympic Association since 1957 and was their Honorary
Treasurer.
He
was a member of the Executive Board of I.O.A. and a Vice-Chancellor
of the Punjab University after serving as Principal at the Government
College in Bhatinda.
He
was associated with the Indian Hockey Federation for over five
decades including as secretary from 1990 to 1994.
His
son, Dr Manmohan Singh, a cardiologist, is the Chairman of the
Medical Commission in the Indian Olympic Association.
Gursewak
passed away at Mohali aged 82.
