He studied at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. 

He played for  India Field Hockey Club, Vancouver.

Hargurnek was Canada's captain at the 1982 Junior World Cup.He played in the 1986 London Hockey World Cup.

He played in the 1990 Lahore Hockey World Cup.

He played in the Pan Am Games (1983, 1987 - Double Gold).

He played in the Intercontinental Cup (1985, 1989- Silver)

Playing against Ajit Pal Singh in Toronto is one of Hargurnek's highlights. So is the tour to Pakistan in 1986.

Hargurnek scored 13 goals at Pan Am Games in Indianapolis, USA in 1987.

He was the Vice Captain of the Canadian team at the Seoul Olympic Games.

Hargurnek Sandhu Hargurnek and his younger brother, Hargurpreet Singh Sandhu were members of the 1982 Junior World Cup and 1990 Lahore Hockey World Cup teams together.

He was the Head Coach of the Canadian National Team (Men) at the Intercontinental Cup in 1993.

He was Canada's assistant coach at the Men's Hockey World Cup in Utrecht in 1998.
