Olympic Games:

Harcharan Singh represented India at the 1972 Munich Olympics Games where India won Bronze medal and the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.

Harcharan studied at Khalsa High School, Shekhupura and State College of Sports, Jalandhar.

He represented Punjab Schools in the National School Games in 1965-66.

He represented Punjab University in the Inter – University Championship in 1967 – 68.

He was selected to attend Pre-Olympic coaching camp in 1967.

He had his first international exposure in 1968 when he was selected to play a Test Match for Jalandhar against the visiting German team.

He played four Nationals for Punjab from 1969 to 1972 and won all of them.

On joining the Army, he captained the Services team in six of the nine Nationals he played for them from 1973 to 1981.

He donned the India colours in 1969 when he was included in the team to play series of matches against Kenya.

He was also in the team that won Bronze at the 1969 International Tournament in Bombay.

The following year, he played Test matches against Singapore and won Silver Medal at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok, losing the Gold to Pakistan.

  • He was in the team that toured England and Germany in 1971.

  • He played in the 1971 South – East Asian Championship in Singapore.

  • He represented India in three World Hockey Cups, winning Bronze at Barcelona in 1971, Silver at Amsterdam in 1973 and Gold at Kuala Lumpur in 1975.

  • He was selected to play the Fourth World Cup in Buenos Aires, but could not make it because of an Army promotion examination.

  • He played against Poland, France and Argentina in 1973 and was chosen to play against Asian All Star team in 1974.
  • He represented India in the 1974 Asian Games at Teheran, again losing the Asiad title to Pakistan.
  • Colonel Harcharan Singh, an Army Service Corps Officer represented India for eight years and at one time was rated as good as the Pakistani celebrity Samiullah Khan.
  • He was awarded the Indian National Award ‘Arjuna Puraskar’ in 1977.
  • He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal in 1981.
