Hockey
started in Uganda at Club level in 1921 when the Entebbe Goan Institute
cup was introduced.
But
it was not until 1948 when the Indian Hockey Team visited Uganda and defeated
her 11 – 0 that fresh interest was generated.
Uganda
started playing competitive matches against her East African neighbours,
Kenya and Tanganyika in 1959.
India’s visit in 1959 was followed by visits by Pakistan in 1960,
1962 and 1963.
By
1966 Uganda were the East African Hockey Champions and rated highly in
International hockey circles.
Uganda
finished second behind Kenya in the 1971 All African Championship and
thereby earned a place in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
Munich
was their first trip outside the African Continent.
Sadly
this was their one and only participation at Olympic Games.
