Sikhs in Hockey in Tanzania

Hockey in Tanzania (Tanganyika as it was formerly known as) followed the same footsteps as Kenya and Uganda.

The three East African countries competed against each other in the annual East African Championship from 1959.

Tanzania Clubs participated in the M.R. D' Souza Gold Cup, the premier Club tournament in East Africa which was organised by the Kenya Goan Sports Association from 1952.

Khalsa Sports Club, Dar es Salaam won the Gold Cup in 1954, well before Sikh Union, Nairobi started their domination from 1959.

Tarlochan Singh Sandhu

Tarlochan Singh Sandhu, born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

He was the Secretary of Tanzania Hockey Association from 1971 to 1988.

He was the Treasurer of African Hockey Federation from 1973 to 1988.

He was Treasurer of Tanzania Olympic Committee from 1971 to 1988.

He was a member for Africa on the Finance Committee of Commonwealth Games Federation from 1978 to 1986.

He was part of the Tanzanian Contingent to the Moscow, LA and Seoul Olympics.

He was an International Umpire and was the Team Manager of Tanzania Olympic Team at the Moscow Olympic Games.

At the LA Olympic Opening ceremony, the Sandhu family represented two countries, Tarlochan representing Tanzania and his elder brother, Pritam Singh, who played hockey for Kenya at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games representing Kenya.

Tarlochan emigrated to Canada in 1988 and now resides in British Columbia.

It is no surprise therefore that with Kenya being the leading hockey nation, opportunities for Tanzania in the International circuit were rare but the boycott by the Western Countries at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games gave Tanzania her one and only appearance at hockey at Olympic Games. The team included two Sikhs.
