Sikhs in Hockey in Canada

Sikh immigrants first arrived in Canada in 1903 to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway or in sawmills. Large scale Sikh immigration to Canada did not begin again until the late 1960s.

Canada first participated in hockey at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games where they finished 14th. However in that team there were no Sikh players.

Since then, Canada has participated at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics and Sikh players were in all the teams.

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics hockey team was coached by a Sikh, Shiv Jagday. His son, Ronnie played for Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
