Hardial
Singh Kular was Kenya's Team Coach at the 1964 Tokyo and
1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.
He
was a Judge at the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympic
Games. |
Hardial
Singh Kular, nicknamed 'Hardie' was born on 7th September
1929 in Nakuru, Kenya.
He
was educated at Allidina Visram School, Mombasa, Kenya.
His
parents came from Sansarpur, near Jalandhar, Punjab, India.

At
the age of 19, he was selected to the National Hockey
team, ironically enough before he even made into his Sikh
Union Club's first team.
He
played for kenya between from 1948 to 1949.
He
played hockey for Sikh Union Nairobi, Kenya. He was a
right half.

He
devoted the second half of his life to the sport and the
Olympic movement.
After
Coaching the National team for two Olympic Games and the
first World Cup in Spain, he became a hockey administrator.
He
was the secretary of the KHU from 1961-1969.

Hardial
became a committed member of the International Hockey
Federation in 1966 and worked on its various committees
-Technical, Competitions, Rules Board committees e.t.c.
He
was also a member of the Hockey Rules Board from 1972
until 1998 - a period of 26 years.
He
was a member of the FIH Council from 1966 to 1998
Eventually
he was elected a Vice President in 1992, the position
he was still holding at the time of his death. |

He
was awarded the FIH'S Order of Merit, which is given for
distinguished service' over a period of at least 10 years.
He
was the President of African Hockey Federation from 1987
until 1998.

Hardial
was one of the most travelled sports administrators in
Kenya.
He
was also a technical delegate and an appeals judge at
the 1972,1976,1984,1988 and 1992 Olympics and the 1973,1975,1978,1981,1986
and 1990 Wold Cups, besides the various continental tournaments.

| Hardila
was General Secretary of National Olympic Committee of
Kenya from 1969 to 1973 and it executive committee member
since 1973.
He
also served as chairma of Kenya Cricket Association, was
member Kenya Football Federation Caretaker Committee in
1985 and chiarman of Simba Union Club where he was Honorary
Patron and trustee at the time of his death.

He
was awarded the Presidential Order of Grand Worrior of
Kenya (OGW) in 1995.
As
President of African Hockey Federation, Hardial was also
a member of the FIH President's Forum from 1987 to 1998.

He
was the past Chairman of Kenya Hockey Union.
He
was also the past Chairman of Sikh Union Nairobi.
Hardial
was awarded the Olympic Order in May 1998 by International
Olympic Committee President, H.E. Juan Antonio Samaranch.
The
honour came for him promoting hockey in the African
continent.
Hardial
died on 23 October 1998 in Kenya at the age of 69.
